Year 1 (5/6 years old) is a fantastic year to watch the rapid progress your children will make in maths. From the early beginnings of using practical apparatus (bricks, cubes etc) they will begin to see addition as the combining of groups of objects and they will begin to use the vocabulary of addition (add, total, more etc).

By the end of the year they will know addition facts to a total of 5 (eg 3 + 2) and know all pairs of numbers with a total of 10.

They will develop their understanding that addition can be done in any order, as well as writing simple number sentences (eg 2 + 3 = 5).

With more practical help they will also be able to add 1-digit to a 2-digit number and use informal written notes to help them (eg jotting down the answer to adding 2 numbers before trying to add the third.)

Confidence with these first steps is crucial to enjoying and being successful with maths and URBrainy is here to help you achieve this confidence.
