Our new Maths Mastery resources for Year 4 provide great support for all children who are following such a programme. This is the term where Year 4 children really get to grips with multiplication and division, including knowing multiplication facts for the 11x and 12x tables. However, the main focus will be on using the formal written methods of multiplication and division. With multiplication this will be multiplying 2-digit numbers by a 1-digit number and 3-digit numbers by a single digit. Whilst we have included an excellent selection of pages much more can be found in our main Year 4 Multiplication category.
Learning the short division method can be tricky for children, especially if they are not confident with times tables knowledge. Again, plenty of practice is needed and we would recommend looking at the Year 4 Division category as well as the Maths Mastery pages.
Children are taught area for the first time this term, and it is important that they understand that area is the amount of space taken up by a 2D shape or surface. At first area is found by counting squares but later multiplication can be used to find the area of rectangles.
At the end of the half term leading into the second half term is a 4 week programme on fractions. This is certainly a big chunk of work and includes:
• understanding equivalent fractions
• understanding improper fractions and mixed numbers
• counting and sequencing fractions
• adding fractions
• subtracting fractions
• finding fractions of quantities
We have a great selection of pages to choose from covering all of the above and by the end of the block children will be confident and happy with understanding and calculating fractions.
