3 in a row addition game
Here we have a great little board game of strategy and knowledge of addition to play with your child.
You will need 2 sets of 5 different coloured counters or cubes plus a calculator and the games sheet.
Decide who is to go first. Player 1 chooses two numbers from the list along the top of the games sheet and adds them using a calculator. If the answer is on the grid place a counter on that square. If it not on the grid or has already been covered it becomes the next players go.
Then player 2 has their turn.
The winner is the first person to put three counters in a row, across, down or diagonally.
At first this may look like a game of chance and children may well try any two numbers to add without working out the total in their heads first. However, it soon comes to the point when a particular total is needed and that's where knowledge of adding pairs of numbers comes in!
