What's New: Measuring capacity
Here is another simple idea to help children understand measuring capacity. At this early stage non standard units of measurement are used eg a cup or a glass full rather than the standard litres and ml.
You need a small saucepan and a selection of different cups, mugs, glasses etc. Try to avoid containers which are too small and would take more than 6 to 8 goes to fill the saucepan as it is very easy to lose count when doing this type of activity.
One of the most important things to do is to have a guess, or estimate, as to how many cups will be needed and then see how close the guess was. There's never any need to guess absolutely correctly, just get closer with time and experience.
