Year 2 maths challenge: Finding quarters
Once children are really familiar with halves they can be introduced to quarters in a practical situation. There are two different aspects to this:
a. dividing a number of objects into 4 (eg 20 sweets between 4 girls)
b. dividing one whole one into 4 (eg a bar of chocolate shared equally between 4 boys)
As with halves each quarter of a whole has to be the same size; there is no such thing as one quarter being larger or smaller than another.
This challenge investigates how many different ways there are of showing a quarter of a bar of chocolate. The bar is divided into 8 equal pieces so any two pieces will equal a quarter - this is a key concept in itself as each piece is an eighth so two eighths is the same as a quarter.
There are many ways of doing this so it will need some logical thinking and organising so that the same solution is not presented twice. Of course, you can always award an edible treat as a reward for good work!
