Year 2 Handling data: sorting information
Sorting information might seem very easy, but there are a number of different techniques used in maths that young children are now expected to understand and use. One of these techniques is the use of Carroll diagrams, named after the famous author who was the first to use them. We have used Carroll diagrams to sort names, letters of the alphabet and numbers.
The diagram consists of four rectangles and numbers, letters or names are placed inside the rectangles depending on whether they meet the criteria. In each case each rectangle has two criteria. For example, the numbers are either odd or even and they are either below 25 or 25 and above.
Whilst this is a good exercise in logic it is also very useful to let children make their own criteria for sorting information.
