This helps explain what division actually means as well as reinforcing knowledge of the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. 20 divided by 5 can be interpreted as, 'how many 5s make 20?' which of course can be answered by knowing the 5 times table: 4 x 5 = 20. It is helpful for children to say these number sentences out loud so that it becomes second nature to them and the link between division and multiplication is made clear.
