Year 2 mental arithmetic: timed questions
An awful lot is expected of children by the end of year 2, including a good basic knowledge of addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division using the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. With this mental arithmetic knowledge they should be able to answer questions quickly.
Sometimes children need an incentive to show how well they can do and certificates or stickers work well for this. They also like a timed challenge and these pages give this. Use a stop watch or stop clock and time how long they take to complete one page. Add 10 seconds on for each incorrect answer, if you like! An adult with a good knowledge of number would probably answer all ten questions in less than 20 seconds, but young children will take much longer, even if they have good mental arithmetic skills.
