Year 2 maths resources: Week 19
This week's year 2 maths resources concentrate on Handling Data and Measurement. The focuses of learning for Block C include:
Sorting information using one or two criteria
Organising information using a table
Choosing and using appropriate units of measurement
Information can be organised in many ways, but, in Year 2 children are expected to be familiar with Venn and Carroll diagrams to sort items. They should also be able to interpret simple pictograms, although at this stage each picture /image should represent just one thing. Later in the year children will be introduced to the idea of a picture standing for 2 or more items.
With measurement, now is the time to really work with centimetres as a standard unit of measurement and all sorts of practical measuring activities should be carried out. When using a ruler make sure children start from the zero , which is not necessarily the end of the ruler, and that if they are using a tape measure they start from zero and not the other end (100 cm or 150 cm). You would be surprised at how many children do this!
