Maths worksheets: Word problems
One of the hardest things children find in maths is to answer word problems which involve using a variety of methods. These pages look at word problems for year 2. A range of methods are needed to answer them. For example:
12 pencils were shared between three children. How many did each child get? How many more were needed to give each child 5 pencils?
Some children will still need 12 objects (pencils) to put into 3 groups to reach the answer 4. others will be able to ring sets of 4 whilst others will be able to calculate the answer mentally because they know that 3 times 4 makes 12.
Again, a variety of strategies can be used to answer the second part of the question, the easiest of which is to multiply 5 by 3.
