Carroll Diagrams: Year 2 Handling data
Lewis Carroll, the famous writer also invented the Carroll Diagram as a way of sorting information. The simplest Carroll Diagram is just two boxes where data is sorted on a 'can' or 'cannot' basis, but it is more frequently seen as four boxes with two attributes. In this case the two attributes are swimming and riding a bike. Child can either swim or not swim; ride a bike or not ride a bike.
Carroll Diagrams are used more frequently in Year 3, but are introduced towards the end of year 2. They can be quite tricky to explain. Once children have got an understanding of them they can try to collect their own data and make their own Carroll diagram from this data. The important thing to remember is to only have two criteria and each must be of the 'can or 'cannot' type or 'has and has not'. (e.g. has 3 sides, does not have 3 sides; is red, is not red etc.).
