Year 2 Maths Challenge: 10p change
This is a really good maths challenge or investigation, suitable for children towards the end of Year 2 or beginning of Year 3, when children have gained confidence in counting up to ten and adding small numbers together.
It would be very helpful to have some plastic coins or even real coins handy to help with this. Children can record their results in a variety of ways, perhaps by drawing the coins or writing it down as an addition sum: eg 5p + 2p + 2p + 1p = 10p.
To begin with most children will work in a fairly random way, collecting coins that make a total of 10p. After a while they should be encouraged to work in a more systematic way to make it easier to check that they have all possible combinations and have not repeated solutions.
