Year 2 Maths Investigation: Car Number Plates
Georgie Gorilla has just received his brand new car, but it hasn't got a number plate yet. Gorilla number plates are easier to read than human ones as they only have the digits 1, 2 or 3 on them and there is only room for three numbers on the number plate. What possibilities are there?
In fact there are 27 different possibilities and if children can find all of them then they will be doing really well.
This investigation can be extended by asking further questions, such as'
'What would happen if you were allowed four numbers, but could only use three at a time?'
'What would happen if you were allowed four numbers on the plate?
'What would happen if you were allowed 3 digits and a letter of the alphabet?'
Some of these will lead to many, many possible combinations and might be more suitable for older children.
This is just one of many maths investigations found in our Year 2 maths Challenges category.
