Year 6 Mental Arithmetic: Sets 9 and 10
The next two sets of ten mental arithmetic questions are now available. This week the questions concentrate on decimals and fractions and cover a number of important concepts, including:
a. Dividing pounds and pence by 10. For example, £4.60 divided by ten is £0.46 or 46 pence. The easiest way to do this is to move each digit one place to the right, remembering that the decimal point does not move.
b. Finding the number of quarters in a mixed number. For example finding the number of quarters in three and a half, multiply three by 4 to give 12 and then add on two more (2 quarters in a half) to make 14.
c. Finding tenths of a number. For example find nine tenths of 100 needs to be done in two steps. Firstly find one tenth of 100 which is 10. Then multiply 10 by 9 to make 90.
d. Writing decimal fractions as fractions, including hundredths. For example 0.13 as a fraction. 0.13 can be thought of as 13 hundredths and therefore can be written as 13/100.
