Mental arithmetic for years 4, 5 and 6
We continue with our weekly programme of mental arithmetic, with two sets of questions for each of year 4, 5 and 6.
The questions on the Year 4 pages require good listening skills as they are quite complex. Perhaps one of the hardest questions involves finding a missing number in the middle of the sequence.
eg find the missing number in this sequence: 20, 25, 30, ?? 40, 45.
Be prepared to read the question several times so that children can remember the numbers involved and work out what to do. They may also need to make a few jottings.
The year 5 questions include number sequences, money problems and time. Watch out for the common error with money and giving change.
eg change from £20 if spending £13.62.
Some children will work out the 38p without a problem and then add on from 13 to 20 to get an answer of £7.38, rather than the correct £6.38.
The year 6 questions are all about time, as children are expected to know the number of hours in a day, days in a fortnight, months in a year etc.
