Mental arithmetic for years 4, 5 and 6
At the start of the new term we are off again on our weekly sets of mental arithmetic questions for years 4, 5 and 6.
The year 4 sets look at writing numbers in figures, place value, and finding more than and less than numbers. The more than and less than questions are quite tricky as they are based around multiples of a thousand eg finding two less than 5000.
The year 5 pages take these ideas a step further, including finding the value of digits in the tens of thousands and multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.
The year 6 sets of questions include questions on rounding and lots of negative number. There are also a couple of tricky questions on dividing a single digit by 10 ( eg 8 divided by 10). To answer these children need a good understanding of place value and decimals. You may well find that some children wil say 'you can't do it', or answer 'zero, remainder 8'.
Remember if reading these questions out then do so slowly and clearly and repeat them, probably twice more as it is much harder to do a question you only hear than it is to see a question. The pages can be used as an alternative to reading them out.
