Year 3 maths worksheet: Missing digits in subtraction sentences
Here we have a set of four pages which look more closely at the number patterns involved with subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number. This is probably best suited to year 3 children who have a good knowledge of subtracting small numbers from 2-digit numbers.
Only part of the subtraction number sentence is given and the rest can be completed in a number of ways. part of the exercise is to find all the possible ways, working in a logical and well organised way.
Pages 3 and 4 are slightly harder as the adjustment, or compensation will need to be taken account of. Watch out for the common error of saying that, for example, 1 - 6 is 5.
It is well worth discussing the patterns created and asking what they notice. 'Why do the units always stay the same?' etc.
