Mental Arithmetic for Years 4, 5 and 6: Sets 39 and 40
Two more sets of 10 mental arithmetic questions for each of the Year 4, 5 and 6 age groups.
The year 4 questions start by looking at time, testing children's knowledge of how many seconds there are in a minute, how many days in a week or month and how many months in a year. There are also questions on money, perimeter and number sequences as well as multiplication and place value.
The year 5 sets also have two questions on perimeter. These are slightly trickier as the perimeter is given together with the length of one side and the length of the other side has to be worked out. There are several ways that this can be done mentally. Probably the easiest is to halve the perimeter and subtract the length of the given side.
The main emphasis of the Year 6 sets of questions is on area of rectangles and squares. it is expected that by the end of year 6 children will be very familiar with square numbers and know at least the first ten square numbers off by heart.
