Mental Arithmetic questions for Years 4, 5 and 6
The last sets of mental arithmetic questions for the Spring Term for Years 4, 5 and 6.
The Year 4 questions are quite tricky and cover a range of concepts. The first two questions are doubling and halving and there is also one on turning a right angle using points of the compass. Many children find it difficult to to sort out East from West and it is a good idea to keep coming back to this.
The Year 5 questions concentrate on measurement, with a wide range of questions from asking which units to use to measure, to working out the number of minutes between two times.
The Year 6 questions look at tests of divisibility, factors, square numbers and decimal fractions. For testing whether a number is divisible by 3, add the digits and see whether that is divisible by 3. If it is then so is the original number. (e.g. 351; 3 + 5 + 1 = 9: 9 is divisible by 3).
Finally, the decimal fraction questions can cause a lot or problems. For example, to find three tenths of 40 needs to be done in two parts, firstly find one tenth by dividing by 10 (4) then multiplying the answer by 3 (12).
