Maths SAT 2011 question and answer 6
Question 6 is one of the easier questions on the paper which most children should correctly answer.
6a Answer: 54
One mark for this question.
This is a straightforward subtraction, although children will approach it in several different ways.
With the emphasis on mental maths many children will work the answer out by adding on from 18 to 72.
18 plus 2 makes 20. 20 plus 50 makes 70. 70 plus 2 makes 72. The answer is 2 + 50 + 2 = 54.
Perhaps the greatest possibility of making a mistake is if the standard written method is used by children who are not confident with it and the adjustment from tens to units is not made.
6b Answer: 63
One mark for this question.
This is a slightly harder question as it involves more than one process to reach the answer.
Firstly, the number she gave to friends needs to be worked out. 10 friends given 5 mints each can be worked out by multiplying 10 by 5 = 50.
Don’t be surprised to see less confident children adding up 10 five times (or 5 ten times!)
Then the 13 needs to be added to the 50, making 63 in total.
