Mental Arithmetic for Years 4, 5 and 6
Today's mental arithmetic questions for year 4 have some pretty tricky addition, subtraction and money questions. Some children will misinterpret a question such as, 'What must be added to 45 to make 100?' as adding 45 to 100, rather than adding on from 45 to 100.
Money questions can prove difficult when the units are mixed, such as in the question, 'What is £4.90 + 20p?' A good way to do this is to think of the £4.90 as 490p and add 20p to make 510p and then rewrite in pounds if necessary. Again, watch out for children who add the pence to the pence and ignore the pounds, reaching an answer such as £4.110p.
For a change the Year 5 questions look at the properties of shapes and measurement. By this age children should be very familiar with the units of the metric system and know that there are 1000g in a kg, 1000ml in a litre and 1000m in a km.
Finally the Year 6 questions are a quick check on how well the properties of shapes are known, including the number of sides for a rhombus, hexagon etc. and the number of degrees in a triangle. There are also some word problems involving length and capacity.
