Years 4, 5 and 6 mental arithmetic: sets 63 and 64
This week our Year 4 mental arithmetic questions look at multiples, word problems and odd and even numbers. Children should be familiar with multiples and be able to recognise multiples of numbers that are found in the 'times tables' e.g. multiples of 4 are 8, 12, 16, 20 etc. One of the harder questions is to find a quarter of a 3-digit multiple of 100. probably the easiest way to do this is to halve and halve again.
The year 5 questions look at measurement and time. The measurement questions presume a knowledge of the metric system , especially grams and kilograms. The time questions involve working with hours and minutes to find the length of time between two given times using the 24 hour clock and multiplying minutes and seconds. There are also three 'square number' questions at the end of these sets.
Finally the Year 6 questions also concentrate on measurement and time. Perhaps the hardest question asks for 7 millimetres to be written in metres, which could cause problems for many, including a lot of adults!
Remember it is well worth 'talking through' these questions and answers, asking how they were worked out and if there are easier ways.
