Maths SAT Paper A 2011 Question 11 with answers
Question 11 is all about the 'more than' and 'less than' signs and is a nice easy two marks if these signs are understood.
The answers are:
<
>
=
>
Award 2 marks for all four symbols correct.
If the answer is incorrect, award one mark for three out of the four correct.
Suggested method:
There are several steps to take to get this correct and many children will slip up along the way.
The first thing to do is to write down the answers to all the calculations, next to them, so that the answers can be compared. This should not cause any problems.
It will then be immediately apparent that the third circle should have the equals sign in.
The next problem is remembering what the < > signs mean.
< means ‘is smaller than’
> means ‘is larger than’
But it is probably a good idea for children to have another method to fall back on. I always think that the wide mouth of the arrow faces towards the larger number, whilst the point of the arrow points to the smaller number.
