Mental Arithmetic for Years 4, 5 and 6
This week the mental arithmetic questions for Year 4 take a quick look at the properties of shape, with questions such as, 'How many sides does a hexagon have?' as well as lines of symmetry.
The last three questions are quite tricky in that they ask for the answers to two calculations to be held whilst working out which is the bigger. This is probably a case for jotting down each part of the answer.
The Year 5 questions are very straightforward addition and subtraction, including adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers from 3-digit numbers and adding several small numbers. These are not easy and need plenty of practice and a good basic knowledge of numbers.
The Year 6 questions take a look at the area of rectangles, a couple of Imperial measurements, negative numbers and a couple of prime numbers. Children who get all these correct will show an excellent knowledge of number.
