Mental Arithmetic for Years 4, 5 and 6: Sets 67 and 68
The first three questions for Year 4 are about ordering 2-digit and 3-digit numbers and finding the middle number. This is much easier if the numbers are seen, but if these questions are only given orally they will need repeating several times. The bulk of the year 4 questions look at time, especially the number of days in months. it is expected that by the end of Year 4 children should know the number of days in each month, or at east have a method of quickly finding out. I like the knuckle method where both hands are put together and going through each month knuckle/between knuckle/knuckle/between knuckle for January, February, March, April etc the knuckles are all 31 days! Cross over onto the right hand and continue, but don't use thumbs.
Year 5 is once again a straightforward addition and subtraction week incl;uding using multiples of ten and 100 as well as decimals.
Year 6 is also addition and subtraction, using larger numbers. With a question such as 7.6 subtract 2.9 the easiest method is probably to subtract 3 and adjust by 0.1. These kinds of question should only be given to children who have a good grasp of number and can happily add and subtract two 2-digit numbers in their heads.
