Maths SAT Paper 2012 Question 13
Perimeter and area are the topics for this question.
The answer to 13a. 14
1 mark awarded for a correct answer.
Suggested method:
This is a straightforward question testing whether or not children know the term perimeter, which is the distance round the outside of a 2D shape.
There is no need to use a ruler for this question as it is stated that the squares on the grid are 1 cm in length. The most likely reason for an incorrect answer is that children count the squares rather than the number of 1 cm sides.
13b. C
1 mark awarded for a correct answer. The answer 5 will be awarded a mark, as this is the area of the smallest shape.
Suggested method:
Firstly, children need to know that area is measured in squares. Shapes A and E are easy to work out as they both only contain whole squares. Shapes B and D are trickier as they have part squares covered, although parts can be combined to form whole squares. In shape C the part shapes are exact halves.
When working out the area of shapes by counting squares it can be quite helpful to mark each square as you go e.g. 1 in the first whole square, 2 in the second and so on. This ensures that squares are not counted twice.
