More on reading and writing the time
By the end of Year 4 children are expected to be able to read the time to the minute on a 12 hour digital clock and on an analogue clock. Many children find this quite tricky, especially those who seldom see an analogue clock face. Most of the time children are looking at digital clocks, including those on phones.
Another difficulty is that we say the same time in different ways. For example: 3:40 can be said as 'three forty' or as 'twenty to four'. It could also be said as 'forty minutes past three', although this is less common.
These two pages take a quick look at reading and writing times. The first set of questions gives the times in words and asks for them to be written in digits. It is important to get used to the convention of using a colon to write a time such as 3:30.
The second part of the worksheet looks at writing times in words, using 'past the hour', whilst the third section looks at writing times using 'minutes to'.
The last section looks at working out times e.g. haf an hour after 10:45. These types of question frequently come up in the Year 6 SAT papers, and could prove useful as a quick revision for older children.
