Ordinal Numbers: Year 1 Word Search
Here is another page to add to our wet break/holiday activities section. It is a word search which looks at the ordinal numbers from first to tenth and is probably best suited to Years 1/2. It can also be used as an activity sheet to help with spellings.
Once children have learnt the numbers from 1 to 10 it is important to get them used to these ordinal numbers and their spellings. The spellings are not easy to explain as some seem to follow a pattern and some don't. For example fourth, sixth, seventh and tenth just have the th added to the end of the equivalent number. However, with fifth the v in five becomes an f, and with ninth the e on the end of nine disappears. Watch out also for eighth, where just an h is added to the word eight.
I wonder why we don't use oneth instead of first, twoth instead of second and threeth instead of third, words I have heard children use, as well as the occasional mathematician! I do know that secundus means following or next in order and that the English language we use today has various origins, from Latin to Middle English to Norse.
