2011 Maths SAT Paper A question 14
Question 14 is typical of the type of question the SAT writers like: a question on reading scales where the divisions are only partly labelled.
The answer to question 14: The arrow drawn to 640 as shown below:
1 mark awarded for a correct answer.
Slight variation is acceptable as long as the arrow is closer to 640 than to 620 or 660.
The mark is still awarded if the arrow does not originate at the centre of the dial.
The answer will be accepted if shown on the upper dial as long as there is no answer given on the lower dial.
Suggested method:
The key on this question is to look carefully at the divisions and read the scale correctly. The marks between each whole 100 grams represent 20 grams, so the scale is showing 760 grams.
Subtract 120 g from 760 g leaves 640g. The arrow must be pointing between the 600 g and 700 g mark and it is 2 divisions from the 600 g mark.
