Maths SAT Paper A 2011 questions 20 and 21
Question 20 is all about understanding the effect of multiplying and dividing by ten or one hundred. If children have been taught that you can multiply by ten by adding a nought then they might well have difficulties. If they know that each digit moves one place to left then they should find this question straightforward.
The key numbers here are 0.47 and 4.07. These two numbers are either multiplied or divided by 10, 100 or 1000.
Question 21 is an old fashioned division question. It has been set out in a horizontal layout and needs to be set out in any way that the child is familiar with. It is hoped that children are familiar with both the long and short division methods, but they may try repeated addition or subtraction.
Repeated halving will also work when dividing by 32.
