Maths Paper A 2011 Question 25 with answers
25. 39 cm Award TWO marks for the correct answer.
If the answer is incorrect one mark may be awarded for showing evidence of appropriate working out with one miscalculation.
e.g. 36 ÷ 3 = 12
36 ÷ 4 = 9
12 + 9 + 9 + 9 = wrong answer
Or
12 – 9 = 3
36 + 3 = wrong answer.
An answer of 42 can be awarded one mark if supported by appropriate working.
Suggested method.
At first this may look a little baffling, but it is important to proceed in a logical way.
Firstly it is quite straightforward to work out the length of each part. This can be done by dividing 36 by 3 and then by 4.
This makes the parts on the strips 12 cm and 9 cm.
It can then be seen that when the new shape is made the first rectangles (left hand side) line up on their right hand sides. This means that the gap on the bottom must be 12 cm – 9 cm = 3 cm; thus making the extension the other end also 3 cm.
All that needs to be done to work out the answer is add the 3 cm to the 36 cm to make 39 cm.
This is the kind of question that many children are reluctant to write down their working out, thus losing the potential for gaining a mark even with an incorrect answer.
