It may have come to your attention that 12th December this year will have the date: 12.12.12: the kind of date many people find fascinating and one which draws the usual 'end of the world' claims. In fact, at the 12th second of the 12th minute of the 12th hour the time will be: 12.12.12.12.12.12! We have been enjoying dates like these since 2001 but it will be many years before a similar date occurs again, in fact, the next century!! To celebrate this date we have published two mini investigations. The first looks at the six digits 1,2,1,2,1,2 and how many different addition statements can be made. We suggest keeping to the addition of two 3-digit numbers to begin with as there is plenty of scope just with this. This should raise some interesting discussion points regarding certain combinations and whether they are the same; e.g. is 112 + 221 the same as 221 + 112. This can be found in our Year 4 Challenges category. The second investigation looks at three twelves and the four signs to see how many different totals can be made. This could prove very tricky as decimals, negative numbers or even calculations which are impossible to work out should all come up!
