Halves and quarters: word problems
This is a set of worksheets suitable for Year 3 children that takes a closer look at word problems involving halves and quarters. One of the basic concepts which needs to be understood is the relationship between multiplication and division, or doubling and halving.
For example; the first question asks:
'What must I halve to get 6?'
The easiest way to do this is to double 6 to make 12. Watch out for children who do not read the question properly, see the word halve and the number 6 and write down 3 as the answer!
Also remember that one of the easiest ways of finding a quarter of a number is to halve the number and then halve again.
