Adding two 4-digit numbers
Once children have been shown the standard written method for addition they need plenty of practice in order for it to become 'second nature'. This set of worksheets introduces the addition of two 4-digit numbers using the following standard method:
The method is to add the units first, put the units in the answer, and ‘carry’
the ten into the tens column. Then add the tens and continue in the same way
into the hundreds and finally the thousands.
So, the steps are:
Step 1: add the units
Step 2: add the tens
Step 3: add the hundreds
Step 4: add the thousands
Note: there may not always be tens, hundreds or thousands to carry.
The first page of the set shows this process more clearly and it is well worth going through it in detail.
