Writing fractions in words
Whist it may seem obvious to us, writing fractions in words or numbers can prove to be rather a mystery to many children. This set of pages should help with this as it keeps to simple fractions.
it is worth pointing out that as well as reading a fraction such as1/3 as one third, it can also be seen as a division; 1 divided by 3, or one divided into three equal parts.
Difficulties seem to arise when there is more than one part to the fraction e.g. 2/5 or two fifths. This means:
'one whole one has been divided into 5 equal parts and two of the parts have been taken (coloured, eaten or whatever)'.
