Year 3 maths programme: week 26
This week we have a wide variety of worksheets, some of which will be very familiar to parents and some which might be completely new. We start with some basic mental arithmetic, but this week they are particularly hard, especially the adding of four small numbers. With these it is well worth reminding children that the numbers can be added in any order as well as making a suggestion of looking for pairs of numbers which make a whole ten or a whole twenty (e.g. 12 and 8).
The two pages on rounding require the ability to divide numbers and recognise whether the answer should be rounded up or down. For example:
'A box holds 4 cakes. How many boxes are needed for 21 cakes?'
Four boxes will hold 20 cakes, but an extra whole box will be needed for the last cake, making 5 boxes in all.
The Money and Division questions are a real challenge and it will be interesting to see what methods children employ to try and reach an answer. halving is an important tool here and working in pounds and pence makes it especially hard.
We also include two sets of pages on early written methods of addition and subtraction, although not the standard method. These intermediate methods may seem unfamiliar to many parents but they are aimed at giving children a better understanding of the process used in the standard methods of addition and subtraction.
