Recognising and continuing number sequences is an important part of the primary maths curriculum. This page looks  at both describing the number pattern and extending it. Of course, the sequence can not be extended until the rule associated with it has been worked out. This recognition of patterns and then extending them is an early stage of algebra which later will allow us to calculate any term in the sequence but that all comes much later.
