Finding fractions of numbers
The word 'fraction' seems to invite terror in the minds of many people. Perhaps it's because in many cases the bigger the number, the smaller the fraction (e.g. 1/2000 is smaller than 1/200) which might be difficult to understand. It might also be that the whole idea of a fraction and what the numbers mean is misunderstood.
Here we have a straightforward set of pages looking at finding simple fractions of numbers. The top number (numerator) is always 1 so it is just a matter of dividing by the denominator (bottom number) to reach the answer. It is very helpful to explain that a division question can be written in the form of a fraction e.g. to find one fifth of a number, just divide the number by 5.
