Year 1: Number and Place Value 2014 Programme of Study (statutory requirements)
Welcome to the first of our documents on the 2014 Maths Programme of Study. We start with what is required in the category, ‘Number and Place Value’ for Year 1 (5/6 years old).
Number and Place Value (statutory requirements)
Pupils should be taught to:
• count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
• count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in multiples of twos, fives and tens
• given a number, identify one more and one less
• identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least
• read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.
What changes can we expect once schools start to work towards the new statutory requirements? Well, in Year 1 Number there are quite a few new challenges.
Perhaps most importantly, children will be expected to count to 100 instead of 20 and be able to count in multiples of five and ten.
To achieve this children will need a great deal of practise reciting numbers, counting objects (17, 18, 19 etc) and ordering (first, second, third etc).
Probably the hardest part of this is the introduction of place value for numbers up to 100 and children will need a lot of support with using objects and pictures to grasp this concept.
As confidence is gained children will be expected to begin to count in twos, fives and tens from different multiples and begin to recognise patterns such as odd and even numbers.
But the good news is that at URBrainy we have updated our resources and have a tremendous selection of material to help reach these goals, found in four categories with over 400 pages of questions and answers:
