Year 1 Geometry Programme of Study (statutory requirements)
Year 1 Geometry Programme of Study
Geometry replaces the old shape and space categories and is in two parts:
a. properties of shapes
b. position and direction.
Properties of shapes
Pupils should be taught to:
• recognise and name common 2-D and 3-D shapes, including:
2-D shapes (e.g. rectangles (including squares), circles and triangles)
3-D shapes (e.g. cuboids (including cubes), pyramids and spheres).
Position and direction
Pupils should be taught to:
• describe position, directions and movements, including half, quarter and three-quarter turns.
What’s new and comments
2-D and 3-D shapes are all around us and opportunities to discuss shapes arise frequently in everyday life (clocks, bath plugs, holes in the road, fencing posts, CDs etc).
At this stage, work with shape should be mainly practical using real shapes and recognising them in different orientations and sizes.
It is important that the correct vocabulary is used ready for Year 2. 3-D shapes have 'faces', 'edges' and 'corners' (later called 'vertices'). Do not use the word 'sides' with 3-D shapes. 2-D shapes have 'corners' or 'angles' and sides.
Position and direction
One new development is the introduction of three-quarter turns. Most of the work associated with this topic should be oral and practical and be carried out in general discussion, in dealing with physical objects in the classroom and home, and in P.E. or movement lessons.
We have plenty of great shape worksheets to help with recognising and naming both 2-D and 3-D shapes.
