Year 3 Addition and Subtraction Programme of Study (statutory requirements)
Year 3 Addition and Subtraction Programme of Study
Adding and subtracting has got quite a lot harder in Year 3, both mental and written methods. Here are the new statutory requirements.
Addition and subtraction
Pupils should be taught to:
• add and subtract numbers mentally, including:
a three-digit number and ones
a three-digit number and tens
a three-digit number and hundreds
• add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction
• estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers
• solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value and more complex addition and subtraction
What’s new and comments
Children continue to be expected to work out more complex addition and subtraction in their heads, using a whole variety of techniques, (including, for example, adding 9 to any three digit number by adding 10 and adjusting).
Working mentally with 3-digit numbers will be a challenge and it is assumed that 2-digit numbers will be calculated mentally, although not actually stated as it is in the Year 2 Programme.
It is in written addition and subtraction where the biggest changes have been made. It will be expected that the formal or standard written method will be used to add and subtract numbers up to 3-digits (as a minimum as it also states using ‘more complex addition and subtraction’).
Most of the other statements are similar to the past, with an emphasis on estimating and checking answers by knowing the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
There are plenty of mental addition and subtraction worksheets available for Year 3. Also lots of worksheets on written methods and don’t forget our games provide excellent practice at all these skills.
