Year 4 Addition and Subtraction Programme of Study (statutory requirements)
The emphasis is on adding and subtracting large numbers in Year 4. Easy, if you know how!
Here is the Year 4 Addition and Subtraction Programme of Study (statutory requirements)
Addition and subtraction
Pupils should be taught to:
• add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate
• estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to a calculation
• solve addition and subtraction two-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.
What’s new and comments
By this time it is presumed that the standard or formal written method of addition has been mastered and all that is needed is more practice with larger numbers. Children will be expected to use the formal method to add two 4-digit numbers. If the method has been grasped in Year 3 this should be quite straightforward.
4-digit subtraction might prove to be trickier, especially when laid out in columns and there are zeros in the top rows; children have always found this hard to master. For this reason we have graded steps of subtraction worksheets, including regrouping tens and hundreds and regrouping hundreds and thousands. We also have several sets of easier written subtraction worksheets for those who still find this difficult.
Again, mental subtraction is not mentioned, but all children will need plenty of revision of the skills previously learned, such as subtracting single digits from whole thousands.
