Year 3 Multiplication and Division Programme of Study
There have been several changes in the Year 3 Multiplication and Division Programme of Study. Learning more times tables is crucial during Year 3 as well as developing formal written methods.
The new programme states:
Multiplication and division
Pupils should be taught to:
• recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables
• write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods
• solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division, including integer scaling problems and correspondence problems in which n objects are connected to m objects.
What’s new and comments
Learning the 8x table is introduced in Year 3 now because of its connection with the 2x and 4x tables and the ability to double numbers. However, the table does need to be learned ‘off by heart’ and not just worked out by doubling the 4x table.
Using formal written methods of short multiplication and division are both new to Year 3.
Written methods of multiplication are introduced starting with calculations of two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers.
We have a great selection of ‘division tables, to help with recognising the connection between multiplication and division.
By the end of the year it is expected that children will be using the formal division method for working out two-digit numbers divided by one-digit.
We are adding new resources on a regular basis to meet these new challenges.
We have over 300 multiplication and division pages to help children reach these new targets, starting with simple tables work and moving through to formal written methods.
