Teaching the time in Year 3 and 4
Teaching the time in Year 3 and 4
Time is one of those topics which is highlighted in the early years and to read the time is considered an important learning step for young children. But in later years it can become neglected as other maths targets such as learning tables take over. However, there are some difficult concepts to be understood, especially for children between 7 and 9. When teaching the time in Year 3 and 4 it is expected that children should be able to read the time to the nearest minute using both analogue and digital clocks, including the 24 hour clock, in Year 3. Roman numeral clock faces are also included. Now, much of this used to be a target for Year 4 and will prove a real challenge for many children. The new Year 4 targets include converting time between analogue and digital 12 and 24-hour clocks, including using a.m. and p.m.
We have plenty of clear time worksheets for both Year 3 and 4, covering all the targets mentioned above, including some great practical ideas. To begin with we have some excellent pages on days, weeks and months and using calendars. They do need some explanation for children who have not come across them before as they do come in various formats. The month shown on the calendars on the worksheets usually starts the week on a Monday, although many calendars start on Sunday. It can seem puzzling to children as to why there are some 'blank' days at the start of the first week so it is a good idea to have a calendar showing the whole year available. It is important that children learn the months of the year and then remember how many days there are in each month. This is now a target for year 3 children.
Whilst the 24 hour clock is now introduced in Year 3, it is in Year 4 that children are expected to convert between 12 and 24-hour clocks. Our worksheets on this provide really clear explanations and should help children master this tricky task.
Why not take a look now, whilst you have a little time on your hands and see how we can help with teaching the time in Year 3 and 4.
