Subtraction in Year 2
Subtraction in Year 2
We have just published 4 new sets of subtraction worksheets for Year 2, giving even better coverage of some important concepts. We have two sets which look at the use of the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to check answers. Another set uses this relationship to complete missing number problems as stated in the new Year 2 Programme of Study for subtraction. We have also added further pages to our setting out subtraction problems in columns. This time we look at subtracting 2-digit numbers, but without any ‘borrowing’. This is aimed at preparing the way for formal written methods with larger numbers in later years.
There are a great many separate skills which need to be learned in order to progress well with mental subtraction in Year 2. These include:
a. subtracting a single digit from a multiple of 10 (e.g. taking 6 from 20)
b. subtracting a single digit from any 2-digit number (e.g. taking 6 from 21)
c. having a fast recall of subtraction facts to 20 (e.g. knowing off by heart that 12 – 6 is 6)
d. subtracting multiples of tens from 100 (e.g. 100 take away 40 is 60)
e. subtracting numbers close to multiples of ten by adjusting (e.g. subtracting 11 by taking 10 and then 1)
f. subtracting 2-digit numbers by counting up (e.g. 32 – 28 by counting on from 28)
g. use the relationship between addition and subtraction to work out answers to the above.
We have a large number of colourful worksheets covering all of the above, which can be found at:
Subtraction in Year 2
As well as this children also need to understand and use the vocabulary associated with subtraction, including:
take away, subtract, how many are left, how much less is, difference between, how many more to make, as well as using the minus sign (-).
Our year 2 subtraction games are great way to reinforce this vocabulary whilst at the same time improving with the fast recall of subtraction facts.
