Year 6 Number Programme of Study (statutory requirements)
Here are the statutory requirements for Number for children at the end of their primary schooling in Year 6:
Year 6 Number Programme of Study
Pupils should be taught to:
• read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10 000 000 and determine the value of each digit
• round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy
• use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across zero
• solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above.
What’s new and comments
By Year 6 children will be expected to use the whole number system up to at least ten million, including negative numbers. This will be a real challenge for many and, indeed, some adults will find these targets difficult to meet. For example, when asked to write a number such as five million fifty thousand and five in digits, many will struggle. Given that these are quite unrealistic targets for a large number of children do not be afraid to go back and use worksheets from earlier year groups.
It is important with children to distinguish between using the 'minus' sign to perform subtraction and using it to indicate a negative number (ie a number less than zero). In the good old days, we used the word 'minus' for both concepts and this led to great confusion such as 'two minuses make a plus' (but only, unfortunately, in some circumstances). It is as well to avoid the use of 'minus' and rather use the words 'subtract' and 'negative', although sometimes in Key Stage 2 SATs the word 'minus' is used in the mental arithmetic test and 'minus' is in general use for temperature readings, of course.
Please note that the Year 6 Programme of Study will not be introduced until September 2015 beacuse the SAT papers will not take account of the changes before that time.
