Year 2 subtracting
Year 2 subtracting multiples of 10 from 2-digit numbers
Children are expected to make a great deal of progress with subtraction in Year 2, but care must be taken to ensure that this new work is built on solid foundations.
At this age most subtraction will still be done orally. All kinds of opportunities arise where simple subtraction questions can be posed, but the numbers need to be kept simple.
A number line is useful so that children can see the movement down the line as numbers are subtracted. This is especially true when subtracting whole tens. Coins, counters or cubes are also excellent resources for practical subtraction exercises.
The idea that subtracting 0 leaves a number unchanged also needs to be re-inforced and children need to realise that 4 - 3 is not the same as 3 - 4.
During this year subtraction facts up to 10 should be learned off by heart (e.g. 8 − 2 = 6).
Only when all these ideas have been fully understood and learnt should children go on to subtracting with larger numbers such as multiples of 10.
Our latest set of worksheets looks at subtracting multiples of 10 from 2-digit numbers and is an excellent resource for those with the confidence to move on to larger numbers.
