Comprehensions on pets
Comprehensions on pets and writing up notes
As a nation we are great pet lovers and as many children are given pets at quite an early age it is a subject which interests them. Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and rabbits form the subjects for our most recent sets of comprehension worksheets. Our comprehensions on pets are really useful because they have all been written at three different ability levels. This makes it easy to provide material for a range of reading abilities or ages. The children are encouraged to answer in full sentences, which means that, if answered correctly, they will end up with a good summary of the passage.
We have also just published four sets of notes on how to look after the same four pets: hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and rabbits.
These notes, which are not written in complete sentences, can be used in a variety of ways:
to write an account, in paragraphs, of how to look after the pet
as information for preparing a leaflet
writing a summary of the most important parts in no more than a set number of words e.g. ‘In no more than 200 words write a summary of how to look after a gerbil’
a class could be divided into four groups, each taking one of the pets and using the notes to prepare a short talk - there is plenty of further information available in books and on the web for them to develop their talk further
