Formal written addition and subtraction in Year 3
Formal written addition and subtraction in Year 3
By the end of Year 3 children are now expected to, ‘add and subtract numbers with up to three digits using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction’.
Put simply, this means adding and subtracting in columns, very much as we were all taught to do in the past. We have a great selection of pages to help children to reach this target and have just published two new sets of worksheets on both addition and subtraction. Each of these has 10 questions on each page and the children need to set them out correctly in columns and add or subtract. Squares are provided to make this easier. The key to success is laying out the numbers so that units line up under each other, as do the tens and the hundreds.
