Year 1 Finding halves
Year 1 Finding halves
It is important to get off to a good start with fractions as many children find them very difficult to calculate with later on. There are two ways to think of fractions. One way is to see a fraction as a part of one whole one. This requires making equal sized parts out a whole eg if a cake is cut into 2 equal parts, each part is called a half.
Fractions can also be seen as part of a set, so a half of a set of eight sweets requires dividing the 8 sweets into two equal parts and then counting how many there are in each part (4 in this case).
We have just published another set of fraction worksheets for Year 1 which concentrates on finding half of sets of shapes. Before attempting these questions children will need plenty of practice using cubes, blocks, counters etc so that they can physically divide sets into equal parts.
